Disability Pay Gap
The gender pay gap, which, according to the ONS, is 7.9%[1], is often a hot topic of debate. While the public is quite rightly outraged at this figure, a pay gap that often falls under the radar is the disability pay gap, which, according to the ONS, is 13.8%[2] in England.
Although there are many reasons for such pay differences, I asked Union members why they think this gap exists nationally. Here are some of the things I was told:
lack of inclusive support is a barrier to working overtime — equalling significantly less pay
feeling unsupported when seeking training for employment development
feeling burnt out with work pressures resulting in time off work.
It’s often the case that the smallest reasonable adjustment can make a whole world of difference! As members of UNISON, disabled members can seek support from specially trained stewards who can listen and support you every step of the way.
Disability comes in many forms, from physical to hidden. If you are struggling at work, please reach out!
The disability pay gap won’t be reduced overnight, but unions are here to push for working conditions that work for everyone and to create equality of opportunity so that every member can thrive and reach their potential regardless of which barriers they may each face. We’re here to put the disability pay gap where it belongs — at 0.0%!
