Advocating for Your Child's Autism Assessment

The Power of Early Diagnosis

An early autism diagnosis provides families with access to vital resources and support services. While professionals often advise that a diagnosis isn't always necessary for support, an early diagnosis can significantly streamline the process of accessing specialised services.

Benefits of Early Diagnosis:

Assessment Tools for Professionals (and Parents):

Once completed, allow the results and rationale behind the answers to be the focus of your conversation with the GP, speech and language therapist (SALT), or pediatric consultant. This will aid in targeted conversations and increase the likelihood of referral for further evaluation!

Persistence is Key, and unfortunately, persistence is often necessary. Don't hesitate to advocate for your child's needs or seek second opinions, even if you encounter initial resistance. You are their voice!!

Empower Yourself with Knowledge and familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms of autism. This knowledge will help you to advocate effectively and address your GP's questions.

Seek Support from Other Parents. Connecting with other parents of autistic children can provide invaluable advice, support, and a sense of community. Check your 'SEND Local Offer' to find out what's in your local area. Google search: " *location* SEND Local Offer."
