Neurodivergents...The Early Warning Systems of Toxic Work Environments

In autistic culture, the canary in the coal mine is a frequent and poignant metaphor. With their small size and high metabolism, canaries were far more sensitive to airborne pollutants than humans. For years, they acted as living early warning detectors for toxic gases in mines, signalling danger and saving countless lives.

The theory is clear...autistic and neurodivergent employees, due to their heightened sensory and social sensitivity, often serve as early warning systems for toxic work environments. When neurodivergent workers experience high levels of stress, it is a red flag signalling an urgent need for organisational change.

Just as in the mines, if the distress of these "modern-day canaries" is ignored, the rest of the team will likely succumb to the same toxic environment.
